Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A fine Costa Rican pendant depicting an abstract manatee figure, hand-carved from a blue-green jade with tan inclusions. The manatee is defined by its short tail, bulbous body, flippers tucked to its abdomen, and an ovoid head with an upturned nose. A biconically-drilled suspension hole rests just behind the head and allows the piece to be worn as a pendant on a larger necklace. Size: 1" W x 1.875" H (2.5 cm x 4.8 cm).
