Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 250 to 800 CE. An incredible jade carving depicting a bird-headed shaman whose body appears to be comprised of several avian forms - particularly when viewed from multiple angles - standing in profile before another pair of avian creatures. Each bird is meticulously delineated with eyes, feathered wings, crests, and beaks. Together the ensemble makes for a very special openwork jade carving. Costa Rica is one of the two regions along with Mesoamerica in which jade was extensively carved during the Pre-Columbian era, and birds were understood to be sky animals that acted as messengers between humankind and the celestial realm. A spectacular form, replete with impressive artistry, technique, and layers of symbolism. Custom stand. Size: 1.625" W x 3.5" H (4.1 cm x 8.9 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on stand
