Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica,Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 800 CE. A finely carved greenstone ax god with a thin blade set below the anthropomorphic deity delineated with an elegant, string-cut visage and upper torso, perforated through the neck for suspension. Impressive for its carving, given this difficult-to-carve stone. Just look at all those facial features. The triangular eyes, that wide nose, gently smiling mouth, headband, and parted coiffure all come together to put forth a countenance with such character. What's more, the sculptor depicts the figure's arms in a folded/crossed position with digits nicely delineated. A lovely example! Size: 1.875" W x 4" H (4.8 cm x 10.2 cm)
