Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A finely-preserved standing anthropomorphic axe god figure, hand-carved from mottled sage-green jade with beige and clear inclusions. The figure is defined by a wide lower body with a tapered edge - hence the name "axe god" - as well as a blocky upper body with incised striations denoting crossed arms and hands. The squat head boasts string-cut features such as triangular eyes, a bulbous nose, full lips, a striated head band, and a trio of grooves across the top representative of hair. A biconically-drilled suspension hole is situated horizontally through the neck and enables the figure to be worn as a pendant. Size: 1.8" W x 4" H (4.6 cm x 10.2 cm); 4.625" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.
