Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, Nicoya Region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. This piece demonstrates the creativity of the ancient Central Americans quite well. The form is a finely, hand built bird effigy vessel with head, wings, and tail appliques - possibly those of a turkey - perched upon webbed feet visible at the front of the vessel. A magnificent program of incised striated designs adorns the turkey vessel's body and applied circular pellets on the head further enhancing the aesthetic qualities of this form. Beyond its handsome appearance, the fact that this is a turkey effigy vessel adds to its appeal as wild turkeys were the most revered bird of the ancient Americas. The piece also shows wonderful manganese deposits on the surface. Size: 6" W x 5.375" H (15.2 cm x 13.7 cm)
