Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, possibly Huetar culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. One theme that we find in Pre-Columbian artworks is their association with music. It seems as though virtually every pre-Columbian culture incorporated rhythms and harmonies in ceremonial rituals, dances, theatrical events, and even warfare. We find evidence of this in the ancient musical instruments and sculptural homages to musicians and dancers. This adorable whistle assumes the form of an animal, perhaps of the avian or amphibian persuasion. Note the impressive skill and style of the ceramicist; the ornate painted decoration in black on red truly brings this little creature to life! Size: 3.5" L x 1.7" W (8.9 cm x 4.3 cm)
