Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 300 to 700 CE. A charming bi-chrome terracotta vessel presenting a rounded body with a generous ring-shaped lip upon three looped legs. Adorning the body of the vessel are three zoomorphic entities applied in high relief - perhaps representing jaguars or pumas - flanked by repeated incised diagonal striations. While much of the vessel is buff, the rim, tripod looped legs, and various areas of the vessel body are embellished with nicely burnished red slip. This vessel type is sometimes referred to as a “cocoa” or "chocolate" pot, as scholars believe it was used to serve this traditional drink. Size: 5" W x 3.8" H (12.7 cm x 9.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Jessica Parsons collection, Boyertown, Pennsylvania, USA; ex-private Walter Young collection, Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA collection
