Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE; Panama, Veraguas, ca. 700 to 1500 CE. A set of 2 pottery bowls from ancient Central America. The Nicoya bowl features a squat foot, a stylized portrait face on the front with ovoid eyes and red facial tattoos, and a squat foot, all decorated with red and black pigment. The larger Veraguas bowl exhibits a compressed circular vessel body atop a broad foot, all decorated with concentric rings of red and black pigment atop a beige ground. Size of largest (Veraguas): 6.78" W x 4.75" H (17.2 cm x 12.1 cm); (Nicoya): 5.125" L x 4.875" W x 3.2" H (13 cm x 12.4 cm x 8.1 cm)

  • Condition: Nicoya bowl with stabilization to fissure stemming from rim, with visible adhesive residue along interior; Veraguas bowl with foot reattached to underside of vessel body. Both vessels with abrasions, fading to pigment, and light earthen deposits, otherwise in nice condition. Great motifs throughout.
