Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste- Nicoya, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A colorful and unique polychrome pottery bowl decorated with human and animal motifs. Anthropomorphic tripod legs depict human figures bending forward under the weight and holding up the bowl. They have perforations horizontally through their necks and backsides where rattles were placed. The short exterior wall band is painted with three abstracted profile heads. The interior lip is adorned with floral elements and three semi-abstract profile heads with arms and jewelry. The bottom of the shallow bowl depicts a large monkey face with a toothy grin. Orange, black, white, and red pigments cover the surface and add lustrous vibrancy to this bowl. Size: 6.25" W x 3.125" H (15.9 cm x 7.9 cm)
