Description:

Greece, Corinth, Leucas, ca. 430 BCE to 400 BCE. OBVERSE: Pegasus flying to right, Greek letter Lambda below. REVERSE: Head of Athena left, wearing Corinthian helmet; cadeuceus behind. BMC XXXV, 17. Size: 8.48 grams, 23 mm

The flying horse known in Greek mythology as Pegasus adorns many of the coins that were struck in Corinth. Even today, a well recognized image from antiquity, Pegasus oftentimes is depicted on one side of the coin with the head of Pallas Athena (wearing a Corinthian helmet) on the other. There are numerous examples of Corinthian coins in both museums and in private collections, and they are well documented in numerous numismatic references. Their are so many different examples of Corinthian coins depicting the image of Pegasus, that if one were to only collect such examples, the collection would run into the hundreds.

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired over the last twenty years; ex-Malter Galleries coin
