Description:

Greece, Corinth, ca. 6th century BCE. An elegant polychrome pottery alabastron - used for holding perfumes and scented oils - with a characteristic round-bottomed, piriform body that rises to a slightly concave rim with an applied handle joining rim to neck. The body is finely decorated with two confronting lions, both standing in profile and roaring at one another, each one delineated in black and red hues with incised details embellishing their visages, manes, and limbs. The field is further adorned with stylized rosettes, the neck with a register of tongues, dot motifs lining the rim, frets surrounding the mouth, and a dotted ring around the central dimple on the base. Size: 1.75" in diameter x 3.2" H (4.4 cm x 8.1 cm)
