Egypt, Coptic, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A special steatite medallion, finely carved from steatite of black hues with white veining, and depicting a religious scene in bas relief on its face framed by a raised border. An integral suspension loop rises above. The iconography features a woman, presumably Mary, presenting the infant Christ to a bearded male. To the left of Mary are a veiled woman and another bearded male. Above if a partial Greek inscription "Imperio" suggesting ruler - perhaps in reference to the future Lord. This scene may represent a Presentation in the Temple scene, or possibly a scene depicting Simeon's visit to the Temple. Size: 2.05" W x 2.45" H (5.2 cm x 6.2 cm)
