Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Viru-Moche Transition, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. Skillfully cut and crafted from copper sheet, a sculptural depiction of a Lord-King crossing the ocean, rowing into the Afterlife, with palm trees at the far side of the raft. The king is adorned with five danglers upon his visage and his facial features and nipples are delineated in repousse. He holds an oar in both hands - amazing that both the boatman and his oar have survived the tests of time! Set in a custom lucite display case. Size: 3.5" H (8.9 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany
