Description:

Contemporary African painting on canvas, n.d. Signed "Kajo" at lower left. A vibrant painting depicting a group of African women carrying their wares to market. While the composition is figural, the artist's penchant for abstraction is clear. When viewed in concert, the women's contiguous forms present almost like a woven blanket, coming together to form one collective being. However, when examined more closely, their elongated figures with stick-like legs and ovoid heads come to view. Each figure wears a colorful garment embellished with passages of impasto and sinuous skeins of paint. The pottery vessels, baskets, and bowls of fruit above their heads are rendered with loose brushwork and gestural marks probably created the back of a paintbrush. All is skillfully delineated in an expressive manner and mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size (sight view): 22.7" L x 28" W (57.7 cm x 71.1 cm) Size (frame): 27.125" L x 32.625" W (68.9 cm x 82.9 cm)
