Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northwest Argentina, Early Period, Condorhuasi-Alamito culture, ca. 200 BCE to 500 CE. A rare example of a smoking pipe made from blackware pottery, featuring a pair of zoomorphic heads below the flared funnel bowl. The tubular, elbow shaped stem is lengthy with a petite inhalation hole, the smoker would inhale while looking into the eyes of the creatures mounted on the end. The upper animal is a bat - with distinctive upturned nasal flaps and big ears, and below is anthropomorphic but slightly avian looking head, with a heart shaped face and beak / nose. Size: 11.75" L x 4.25" W x 9.5" H (29.8 cm x 10.8 cm x 24.1 cm); 11.75" H (29.8 cm) on included custom stand.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.

  • Condition: Repaired and restored from several pieces. Infill with new material to gaps and break lines on the flared rim. Bat ears are restored from new material. Hairline break lines visible on the stem. Tl hole on the upper rim and second Tl hole on the lower underside near the mouthpiece.

Our shippers of choice are DHL for International shipments and UPS for domestic shipments, but we are able to ship via other carriers at the buyer's expense as deemed necessary or by request.

For shipments of oversize items, Artemis Gallery will assist the buyer in working with a third-party shipping provider. For shipments outside of the USA, customs and duties may apply upon entry into said country, and this fee, if any, is the buyer's responsibility.
