Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A finely woven textile poncho/tunic comprised of camelid fibers that is beautifully delineated with a striated pattern in hues of russet brown, cocoa, and creamy beige. Inca tunics were called unku in the native Quechua language. As we see in this example, they are usually longer than they are wide. Given its size, this garment was most likely intended for a boy or a young man. A wonderful example of the Andean artisans' superlative textile production. Size: 17.5" L x 15" W (44.4 cm x 38.1 cm)

Provenance: private Andrade collection New York, NY, USA acquired 1960's; ex-Knoedler & Company
