Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a rounded bottom and thick walls that rise to a flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. Adorned in hues of powder blue, marigold, aubergine, teal, and black atop a creamy beige ground, the elegant dish is skillfully hand-painted to feature the tondo of a floral motif at the center surrounded by a star-like design, all filled with intricate geometric, polka dot, and vegetal patterns. Phytomorphic decoration additionally embellishes the rim, while the exterior is coated in a lustrous cream-hued glaze with a beautiful natural craquelure. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Size: 15" Diameter x 3.8" H (38.1 cm x 9.7 cm)
