Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A stunning wearable necklace made from ancient beads on a modern cord with a modern clasp. A collection of eight cylindrical and thirty-eight round hand cut, hand polished, and hand drilled translucent rock crystal (quartz) beads. Two large, hourglass-shaped tumbaga beads, each with its sides pierced, frame the sides of the necklace. Although today we classify minerals by their geochemistry, people in the ancient pre-Columbian world classified them according to their perceived properties. Due to the translucence of crystal, the ancients associated it with the sea, rivers, and lakes. Size of largest bead: 1.1" W (2.8 cm); length of necklace: 17" L (43.2 cm)

Provenance: from the Estate of Wylda Hammond Nelson, MD, Davis, California, USA
