Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Carved from a single piece of volcanic stone, a metate depicting a human figure with the head looking out from one end, and four abstract limbs serving as the feet of the seat which is carved with a rectangular depression fit to receive a respected dignitary. Traces of red pigment remain on the head, limbs, and other surfaces. Size: 13.75" L x 8.375" W x 3.5" H (34.9 cm x 21.3 cm x 8.9 cm)

Metates were initially created to grind foods such as corn, certainly a utilitarian purpose; however, they evolved into meaningful ritual objects, replete with strong iconography and intriguing sculptural forms have transformed these objects into much more than a tool. Examples with figural and decorative carving were sometimes used to seat a departed lord on his journey to the afterlife.
