Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel enveloped in a umber-red slip, with rounded nodules protruding slightly from the surface. The body balances upon a narrow foot; perhaps the overall form is intended to resemble a peyote cactus which has psychoactive properties that may have been used in religious and spiritual rituals. Vessels like this example were primarily used in funerary rituals as many have been found deposited in shaft tombs across the region. Size: 7" Diameter x 5.25" H (17.8 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Dorothy Leofsky collection, Placerville, California, USA, acquired July 2009
