Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished ceramic red-slip vessel with a body shaped like a peyote cactus. The base is supported by eight raised ribs which curve around the bulbous body, leading upwards to a wide angular spout and a triangular knob handle with five petal-shaped sections representing a closed peyote blossom. This type of vessel was perhaps used to contain juices from the peyote cactus which, aside from shamanic use, was employed in everyday actions like healing wounds or treating certain types of illnesses. Size: 4" W x 3.5" H (10.2 cm x 8.9 cm).
