Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built redware pottery reclinitario vessel of a characteristically abstract form with a diagonal body resting upon a pair of bent legs. The slanted body features a flat top with an incised slit on one corner indicative of an abstract fish or avian creature, and the body is flanked by a quartet of fin-shaped protrusions. Behind the upper rim is a thick pouring spout. Reclinitarios were used by individuals of high rank to support their heads and backs when seated or reclining. The hybridized iconography of the reclinitario signifies a metaphor for dreams which often assumed surreal transitional states. Size: 7.875" W x 7.1" H (20 cm x 18 cm)
