Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A fabulous redware reclinatorio of a traditional avian form with the head in profile so as to present the pointed beak, extended wings to each side, and tailfeathers below. A large spout extends from the verso of the head, and two legs extend below. Reclinatarios such as this were used by individuals of high rank to support their heads and backs when seated. A wonderful exemplar of Colima technique and stylings. Note the virtuosic combination of stylized geometric and curvilinear forms to conjure the bird imagery not to mention the warm red finish and amazing manganese deposits gracing this handbuilt terracotta form. Size: 9.25" L x 7.75" W x 9.75" H (23.5 cm x 19.7 cm x 24.8 cm)
