Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A very fine redware figural effigy vessel depicting a smiling shaman seated with both hands extended to outspread feet and an arching back perhaps indicative of a hunchback. In the Pre-Columbian world hunchbacks were regarded as special, their physical deformities were believed to signify that these beings were touched by the deities. Note the comical contrast between those elongated arms compared to his stubby legs. He wears a grand cylindrical headdress that doubles as the spout, a prominent three-petaled collar, and perforated ears for the suspension of ornaments. The handsome form is enhanced further with deep red slip and incised details. Nice rootmarks and manganese deposits to boot! Size: 6.25" deep x 7" W x 10.25" H (15.9 cm x 17.8 cm x 26 cm)
