Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A redware figural jar depicting a kneeling female, nude except for her round ear ornaments and headband, with a finely modeled visage comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, a straight, pointy nose, and full lips. The sculptor carefully delineated her breasts and protruding perhaps pregnant belly. Note how her short, attenuated arms serve to place the emphasis on her locii of fertility. Given her focussed expression and what appears to be a birthing pose, this woman may be about to bring a new life into the world. Custom, wood stand. Size: figure measures 3.875" W x 6.75" H (9.8 cm x 17.1 cm); 7.5" H (19.1 cm) on stand

Provenance: Ex - private LA County collection acquired before 1990
