Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built redware pottery vessel depicting a hunchbacked figure whose back consists of a large, spherical vessel held aloft by a tump line wrapped around the forehead. A segmented column along the verso represents the figure's spine as it protrudes out from the skin, and the entire vessel sits upright via a third 'leg' emanating from the underside. Size: 6.25" L x 6.5" W x 4.9" H (15.9 cm x 16.5 cm x 12.4 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to one leg, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Abrasions and nicks commensurate with age, with light fading to pigment, and earthen deposits in scattered areas, otherwise in good condition. Nice preservation to overall form.
