Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fabulous example of Colima pottery depicting a dwarf with a hunchback, seated and leaning forward with hands on spread legs. Note the facial detailing with coffee bean-shaped eyes, an upward-pointing nose, a straight mouth, and a pointed chin. His pose accentuates his hunchback with a prominent curved spine that juts out just before his posterior as his round belly bulges forward. People suffering from such physical impairments were considered divine and often played the role of shaman within the Colima society. Size: 8.5" L x 8.8" W x 9.6" H (21.6 cm x 22.4 cm x 24.4 cm)

Provenance: Private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
