**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful pottery vessel in the form of a gourd on its side with a discoid body and a ridged periphery, all enveloped in a rich, burnt sienna slip. The stem and leaves of the squash protrude from one side, while a coiled vine is displayed at the other. An ovoid, slightly slanted base supports the dish, allowing a conical spout with folded rim to rise from the top. Size: 7.7" W x 9" H (19.6 cm x 22.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration and some repainting. Chipping with minor losses to rim and vine. Surface wear as shown. Great remaining pigments and nice earthen deposits. Slanted base gives vessel slight wobble.
