Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A head-turning and definitely male redware figure standing upon his widespread, hefty legs, holding or perhaps fondling his enormous phallus with his left hand, and as a means of necessary support, placing his right hand upon his lower back as he wields his grand and obviously aroused penis. He turns his helmeted head - which suggests shamanic, warrior, and/or leadership status - toward the left and presents a countenance that may be interpreted as one of joy or possibly grit as he squints his coffee bean shaped eyes and either smiles or clenches his teeth from passionate exertion. This piece, with an open spout emerging from the side of this gent's crested helmet, was most likely used to pour ritualistic libations related to fertility given the subject matter. It exemplifies the sculptural style of the Colima with its smoothly modeled forms, burnished warm red hues, complex posture, theatrical gestures, and passionate facial expression. An eye-opening example from this shaft tomb culture! Size: 9.5" H (24.1 cm)

The sculptural creations of Colima are quite distinctive with smooth, rounded forms presenting remarkable consistency in their warm russet red hues. In addition, the sculpture of Colima is known for a wide range of postures and expressions, making them quite intriguing to us, even some 2000 years after their origination.
