Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. One of the most fabulous Colima acrobat vessels we have ever seen! Quite a contortionist, this gent stands on his hands with his legs arched over his head and actually touching his knees! A wonderful series of applied ornaments adorn his hips, with the spout emerging between his legs, suggesting a phallic reference. His head remains upright for the most part - miraculously, his helmet still hasn't fallen off during this athletic feat - and his wide eyes and pursed lips contribute to an expression of utter focus and concentration. A spectacular example with nice areas of craquelure and liberal manganese deposits. Size: 5.375" W x 7.625" H (13.7 cm x 19.4 cm)

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields and Riverbend Gallery
