Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima Culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Reclinatarios such as this were used by individuals of high rank to support their heads and backs when seated. The iconography of this form is comprised of a stylized bird head, a turtle-like body visible from the front with human legs on the backside perhaps signifying a metaphor for dreams which often assume surreal transitional states. In addition to this complex symbolism, the piece is a wonderful examplar of Colima technique and stylings. Note the virtuosic combination of geometric yet simultaneously curvilinear forms not to mentions the warm red glaze of this terracotta form. 8"T x 7-1/4"W x 4-1/2"D Ex-Ramon Kelly Collection.
