Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery figure wearing a discoid bangle on the ankle of each delineated leg. The flute-playing figure stands atop arched feet, wears a broad skirt with a thick belt, and holds a conical flute to the mouth with bent, sinuous arms. The head bears hoop-form eyes, a protruding nose, a chin strap beneath pursed lips, and tab-shaped ears, all beneath a wide-brimmed hat. A slit-form mouthpiece atop the hat is used for the whistle tone hole behind the head, and the instrument produces a high-pitched sound when played. Size: 3" W x 6.25" H (7.6 cm x 15.9 cm).
