Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fantastic round-bodied, low vessel with a flanged body and wide, flared mouth with unpronounced rim. Around the body are two layers of fringe-like "horns"; at front and back the head and tail of a horned lizard project outward. These fascinating, ant-eating lizards are unlike any others found in North America, and have captured the human imagination for thousands of years - from the ancient Native Americans of the US Southwest, who depicted them in petroglyphs, to the Mexican coast, where this delightful vessel was created. Size: 13" W x 7" H (33 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
