Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful example of a hand-built pottery figure depicting a male ball player standing atop bent legs. He wears a striated loincloth and an ornamented sash around his waist, a pair of heavy bands around his outstretched arms, and a large beaded necklace which hangs to his navel. Applied circular eyes with slit-form pupils, a conical nose, puffy lips, and large ear spools shape his minimalist visage, and a padded cap tops his tall brow. Pale-orange slip covers most of the highly-burnished figure, though some areas have darkened to a light brown hue. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 5.5" W x 6.55" H (14 cm x 16.6 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
