Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. Hunchback figural vessel, with prominent horn above forehead, indicative of his status as shaman. In the eyes of the ancients of the Americas, a hunchback was a sign that this individual was 'touched by the deities' and thus he was bestowed his shaman status. He sits regally with hands on knees and closed eyes as if in a trance. While nude, he is decorated with stylized coiffure or helmet, a grand, lunar-shaped pectoral, applied shoulder pellets and pierced ears for ornaments. Quite a handsome guy! Size: 7-1/2"L x 8-1/4"W. Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108200
