Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A set of 2 hand-built pottery whistles, each depicting a stylized avian creature. The darker whistle exhibits a crescent-shaped mouthpiece, and the larger redware bird bears a pair of tone holes atop the back. Both still create high-pitched sounds when played. Size of largest (redware): 2.71" L x 1.32" W x 1.76" H (6.9 cm x 3.4 cm x 4.5 cm)

  • Condition: Darker whistle with repair to neck; redware whistle is intact. Each with light abrasions and nicks, with fading to red pigment on darker whistle, otherwise in great condition. Whistles still produce pleasing sounds.
