Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a largish vessel on a round base and with a disc rim. The body has been hand-molded with organic forms all around the shoulder. It is painted overall in deep reddish brown and burnished. The gourd form calls to mind the agricultural element of the West Mexican shaft tomb culture. Size: 9.4" W x 7.25" H (23.9 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex Collection of Will Barnet, (b. 1925) an American artist known for his paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints depicting casual scenes of daily life and in transcendent dreamlike worlds. A longtime resident of the National Arts Club, Barnet died in New York City on November 13, 2012, at the age of 101.
