Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A nice set of 2 hand-built pottery figures known as 'gingerbread' figures due to their relatively flat forms, both standing on delineated legs and petite feet. The first figure wears a diagonally striped skirt, arm bangles, and a pair of pendants on a necklace. The face bears slightly bulging eyes and pursed lips beneath a simple cap. The taller figure dons arm bands, a studded belt above a striated loin cloth, shoulder scarification pellets, and a multi-strand necklace with dangling tassels. Above the visage is a headband with a pinched brim and a top finial resemble an abstract bird. Size (taller figure): 4.625" W x 9.3" H (11.7 cm x 23.6 cm); (second figure): 3.625" W x 7.125" H (9.2 cm x 18.1 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Larger figure has repairs with thick adhesive to proper right arm below shoulder, left arm above shoulder, head at neckline, and midsection above belt. Second figure repaired from 3 large pieces along midsection, with thick adhesive residue along break lines. Larger figure has small losses to tips of both hands, left foot, and nose, while second figure has losses to 1 side of nose and some lower areas around skirt. Both figures have nice preservation to overall forms and good preservation to some finer details.
