Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely pottery flute adorned with brown slip with the figure of a warrior just below the mouthpiece. The warrior wears a large helmet with shell-shaped ear pads over his ears with a large chin strap and long sash below. Plays quite well, with four holes for changing the pitch and tune. Size: 8.2" H (20.8 cm); 9.75" H (24.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Houston, Texas, USA collection, acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994

  • Condition: Area of repair and reattachment near second tonal hole down from mouthpiece. Age-commensurate surface wear, minor chips and nicks to both ends, with nice earthen and mineral deposits. Warrior still has clear and visible features. Flute still playable with nice tonal sounds.
