Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely pottery figure of a stylized anthropomorphic form. The figure stands atop a pair of delineated legs in a pantomime pose with a broad chest and an elongated conical head - characteristic of the “gingerbread” motif found within Colima arts. This minimalist example has a striking silhouette and wears an elaborate headdress but is otherwise nude. Size: 5.1" W x 7.5" H (13 cm x 19 cm)

An excellent example from the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition. Ceramic figurines such as this are among the most expressive and dramatic created in Mesoamerica. According to scholars of this tradition, such ceramic figures were the primary outlet for artistic expression for the shaft tomb cultures and there is little record of monumental architecture, stelae, or public art associated with these cultures.
