Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine hand-built terracotta figure of woman, seated with hands resting on crossed legs. The stomach is rounded and protrudes outward, perhaps to further accentuate feminine fertility, and supports two nursing infants. The figure has a stylized elongated head with an applied headdress and necklace. Two perforations in the ears indicate earrings or may have held additional ornamentation. Black and red pigments are painted to accentuate details across this woman's body, including her mouth, and armbands. A charming depiction of motherhood, and twins likely had mythic symbolism in Colima culture! Size: 4.125" W x 6" H (10.5 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
