Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A delightful hand-built pottery double duck effigy vessel on a flat base. The two ducks' long necks support bulbous heads with inth delineated eyes and rounded beaks. Their bodies conjoin in the center and they support a long spout between their backs above diminutive pointed tails. The surface is covered in a russet red slip with darker areas of burnishing. The iconography of these water fowl was symbolic, since ducks were viewed as sacred animals of the watery realm and the sky world as they could both dive deep under water and fly long distances through the air. The Colima were a shaft tomb culture and this duck effigy perhaps acted as a spirit guardian for the deceased. Size: 6.5" L x 7" W x 6.75" H (16.5 cm x 17.8 cm x 17.1 cm)
