Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima Culture, ca. 100 BCE - 250 CE. Classic Colima ceramic art is comprised of an extensive range of vessel forms, from actual representations of figures to sea and land animals to fruits and vegetables. This piece departs from the well-known tripod vessels; however, is quite intriguing for its stylistic form, beautiful, rich red finish, and intriguing iconography. The piece features a procession of sea creatures each with a trio of incised lines on their shells circumambulating the periphery with bean-shaped or moon-like motifs adorning the shoulder. This vessel was likely used in ceremonial rituals, as pieces imbued with such rich symbolic imagery served more than utilitarian purposes. ~6"T x 10"D at widest Provenance: Ex-Ramon Kelly Collection.
