Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima / Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A fascinating blackware jar in the form of a dog seated anthropomorphically on his posterior with legs spread and head projecting forward. His front legs bend to place a paw on either side of his neck as his head presents coffee bean-shaped eyes, delineated nostrils, and a slightly open mouth baring 2 rows of teeth. His back dramatically arches, giving the impression of a hunchback, who were largely considered as supernatural beings in pre-Columbian cultures, while his bulging belly rests just above a petite, protruding phallus. The flared spout of the vessel is placed just behind the canine's head, opening to his hollow interior. Size: 6.8" L x 5.4" W x 7.3" H (17.3 cm x 13.7 cm x 18.5 cm)
