Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of broad form with a gadrooned exterior comprised of dozens of vertical shrimp. The red-hued walls are incredibly smooth and bear faint remains of painted decorations across most of the shoulder, body, and base. Gadrooned vessels like this example were primarily used in funerary rituals as many have been found deposited in shaft tombs across the region. Size: 12" Diameter x 7.125" H (30.5 cm x 18.1 cm)

  • Condition: One small repair to lip, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions and fading to pigment, otherwise remainder of vessel is intact and excellent. Wonderful preservation to form, with light remains of pigment across most surfaces.
