Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 100 BCE to 250 BCE. A large globular redware terracotta vessel, with a gadrooned body, a narrow neck that resolves to a wide splayed rim, all supported by a tripod of finely delineated parrots, the eyes pierced and highlighted by formlines. In the Pre-Columbian world, parrots were believed to possess supernatural powers deriving from a celestial origin. Beyond this, scholars believe the inspiration for the fluted sides of Colima vessels was either the organic forms of pumpkins or barrel cacti. All is pigmented with a burnished persimmon orange slip. A marvel of skilled technique and beauty! Size: 13.5" W from leg to leg x 10" H (34.3 cm x 25.4 cm)
