Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A cute burnished two-tone redware double duck effigy vessel, the form comprised of co-joined ducks, each with plump bodies, incised eyes, slender necks and wings. The conjoined fowl could symbolize unity, and ducks were viewed as sacred animals of the watery realm and the sky world as they could both dive deep under water and fly long distances through the air. Ducks and other waterfowl were used as protectors against evil spirits and ritualistically sacrificed and eaten, and in addition, duck effigies were associated with fertility and rebirth. West Mexican shaft tomb cultures like the Colima used effigy vessels, such as this example, as spirit guardians or guides for the deceased. Size: 9.75" L x 5" W x 6.5" H (24.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 16.5 cm)
