Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Autlan variety, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built redware pottery male figure of a sizable form standing atop delineated legs and stylized feet. The morose prisoner has a forward-leaning pose, wears a simple loincloth around his waist as well as a bola necklace with a pair of shell-form ornaments around his neck, and holds his hands behind his back as they would be if wrapped with bindings. The man exhibits a defeated countenance with heavily-incised eyes, a petite nose, sunken cheeks, and an open mouth, with a rounded coiffure capping the head. Size: 3.5" L x 3" W x 7.2" H (8.9 cm x 7.6 cm x 18.3 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Wrists and hands of both arms restored, and original pottery bindings consequently missing. Minor abrasions and nicks, and light softening to some incised details. Light earthen deposits throughout.
