Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A spherical, round-bottomed pottery vessel of wide form with a squat neck and a flared rim. The beige-hued ground is decorated with dense black and red pigments that form faces enclosed within dense linear stripes around the body as well as with a highly stylized anthropomorphic face on one side of the rim; the opposite side of the rim features a protruding striped horn. Size: 7.48" Diameter x 8.3" H (19 cm x 21.1 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 200. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.
