Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery enema vessel bearing intricate eye-like motifs around the gently compressed spherical body. The vessel rests atop a squat foot and has a sloped shoulder that tapers to a narrow neck and a slightly flared rim. The neck is adorned with tightly spaced, red-painted oscillations and purple triangles outlined in black, and broad black stripes enclose the semicircular body decorations, all atop an orange ground. A petite vent hole on one side of the shoulder enabled rapid dispensing of the contents held within. Size: 5.3" W x 7.875" H (13.5 cm x 20 cm)

For a similar example with a cream-hued ground, please see Labbe, Armand J. "Guardians of The Life Stream: Shamans, Art and Power in Prehispanic Central Panama." University of Washington Press, 1995, p. 108, fig. 111
